Shade Tree Table

The humble coffee table works hard. This is my latest version: straighforward but refined, sturdy yet lightweight, compact and practical. You’ll be hard pressed to find another piece easily picked up and moved by a single person but resilient enough for heavy daily use. I named it for the lush green shade of the trees it’s made from, always welcome on a summer day in the Willamette Valley.

Through tenons and bridle joints give the Oregon ash base strength aplenty. The 3/4” thick Bigleaf maple top fastens securely to the base with screws in slotted holes under Pacific madrone inlays, allowing for seasonal wood movement. Hand-shaped edges and relieved corners keep this piece comfortable.

The 19”x44” top seats two diners or four plus sharing communal snacks and drinks. This table stands 17-3/4” high, suitable for most couches and easy chairs.

Oil finish on top, shellac on base.

As shown, $650.
